Abstract

656,941. Well packers ; formation testers. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Jan. 13, 1949, No. 1006. Convention date, April 23, 1948. [Class 85] A well packer which is modified to take fluid samples from particular strata of a borehole comprises a flexible sleeve 4 having a pervious centre portion 10, the sleeve 4 being secured in a fluid-tight manner at the upper end to a tubular housing 6 positioned on a drill stem 2 and at the lower end to a rod 5 which extends upwards into the housing 6. The space between the sleeve 4 and the rod 5 is completely filled with pellets 18. The spear-head upper end of the rod 6 is provided with spring-biased latches 8 that can engage with projections 9 formed in the housing 6. When required for use the latches are pressed inwards when the assembly is at the surface and the weight of the rod 5, the sleeve 4 and pellets 18 is sufficient to hold the rod in a position where the latches are below the projections 9. The tool is then lowered into the well until the permeable section 10 of the sleeve 4 is adjacent the strata 11 from which it is desired to obtain a test sample of fluid, and the rod 5 is drawn upwards by a suitable tool lowered through the drill stem so that the sleeve is contracted in length, but since its volume remains unaltered, it is forced into sealing engagement with the sides of the bore whilst the latches engage the projections 9 so holding the sleeve in this position. Fluid pressure is reduced in the drill stem and fluid from the strata 11 percolates through the permeable section 10 of the sleeve and the pellets to pass through openings 16 in the rod 5 and so upwards through the rod past the non-return valve 14 and out through ports 15 in the housing 6 into the drill stem. To release the assembly a weighted sleeve is lowered down the stem to release the latches so allowing the packer to be elongated with subsequent diminution of cross section. The pressure in the bore above and below the packer is equalized when the sleeve engages the borehole walls, since there is a byepass formed by chamber 7, telescopic tube 30 and port 12.
