656,871. Frequency and phase modulation. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. March 26, 1943, No. 4966. Convention date, March 26, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XL (a)] Frequency or phase-modulated oscillations are obtained by subjecting a carrier-modulated electron beam, in a zone between an entry O and a collector A, to a variable magnetic field extending over a major portion of the zone and which deflects it in an arc and produces in it a variable time delay; if the variation is proportional to the integral of the intelligence to be transmitted, a frequency modulation is obtained. The beam from cathode K is modulated at G with a pure sine wave of stabilized frequency and at O enters a region of crossed magnetic and electric fields H and E respectively, describing a cycloid before impinging on anode A with a time delay depending on the value of the magnetic field. To reduce the length of the anode, the magnetic field is made up of a fixed part and a variable part. The electric field E may be omitted. The coils Q1, Q2 which produce the magnetic field may be part of the anode inductance of an integrator of the type in which an inductance of high impedance forms the anode load of a thermionic valve of low impedance. The alternative form of integrator in which a condenser of low impedance loads a high impedance pentode is also referred to.
