Abstract

656,785. Moulded boards &c. DISHON, B. R. Jan. 28, 1948, No. 2617. [Class 96] Boards &c. made by moulding, under high pressures, e.g. 200-210 atmospheres, and at temperatures of the order of 150‹ to 175‹ C., a mixture prepared by soaking powdered lignocellulosic materials with a dilute acid or an aqueous solution of an acidic substance capable of rendering the crusts of the powder particles self-bonding, drying the mass until it crumbles and then mixing therein a substantially dry neutralizer. Wood, cotton seed hulls, cotton and maize stalks, and reeds are suitable ligno -cellulosic - materials. Suitable acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric trichloroacetic and maleic. Aluminium sulphate is a suitable acidic substance. The neutralizer and the acid should preferably react to form an insoluble salt. The neutralizer may be mixed with a resin, e.g. limed rosin or used as an aqueous solution absorbed in a powdered or fibrous filler, e.g. calcium acetate solution absorbed in sawdust. Gelatine and phenol plastics may be used as fillers and/or binders and paraformaldehyde may be added to harden the gelatine.
