Abstract
<PICT:0656506/IV (a)/1> Cellulose is extracted from vegetable matter by predigesting with either a caustic soda lye at 60-100 DEG C. or a sodium carbonate lye at a temperature above 100 DEG C., washing and then further digesting under pressure with an alkaline sodium monosulphite lye. A temperature of 80 DEG C. is preferred for the predigestion when caustic soda is used. Cellulosic materials specified are straw, certain reeds such as Provence cane, and esparto. The predigestion and washing steps may be effected in a continuous process as in the Figure: raw fibre 1, caustic soda 2 and an impregnating liquid 3 recovered from a later stage of the process are mixed in digester A from which the pulp 5 is withdrawn, and washed twice at D and F. Black liquor 4, wash-water 6 and excess impregnating liquid from 3 are collected at 7 and regenerated at B by acidifying with sulphur dioxide from 8 and centrifuging. The separated organic matter is washed with acid liquor which is recirculated with the black liquor 4. The regenerated acid liquor 9 from the centrifuge B is neutralized and used for the second washing of the pulp. The final digestion of the pulp may be carried out at 150-170 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also refers to the treatment of stalks of maize and bagasse. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
