Abstract
In a process for making sulphur trioxide from pyrites, the latter is mixed with an oxide of manganese, preferably in the form of a mineral such as braunite or polianite, and heated to at least 700 DEG C. In operation, the mixture is first heated to about 400 DEG C., this temperature being maintained so long as gaseous impurities (oxides of As and Sb) are evolved and entrained by means of a current of air, which is passed through the furnace, into collecting receivers connected to the furnace, whereafter the receivers are replaced by sulphuric acid containers and the temperature is raised to at least 700 DEG C. whereby SO3 is evolved and absorbed by the H2SO4. The process may be operated either in a continuous batchwise manner, the residue from each batch being allowed to cool before adding the next batch, or in a discontinuous batch-wise manner, the residue in either case being used as the manganese oxide for succeeding batches. Auriferous pyrites may be treated in a similar manner and the gold may be extracted from the residue in known manner after magnetic extraction of the iron oxide.ALSO:In a process for making sulphur trioxide from auriferous pyrites (see Group III), the pyrites is mixed with an oxide of manganese, preferably in the form of a mineral such as braunite or polianite, and heated first to 400 DEG C, this temperature being maintained so long as gaseous impurities (oxides of As and Sb) are evolved and entrained by means of a current of air passing through the furnace into collecting receivers connected to the furnace, whereafter the receivers are replaced by sulphuric acid containers and the temperature is raised to at least 700 DEG C whereby SO3 is evolved and absorbed by the H2SO4. Gold may then be extracted from the residue, the porous structure of which allows easy chlorination or cyanidation and washing. The process may be operated either in a continuous batchwise manner, the residue from each batch being allowed to cool before adding the next batch, or in a discontinuous batchwise manner.
