Abstract

655,008. Mist lubricators. NORGREN, C. A., and MOSIER, K. C. Oct. 1, 1948, No. 25655. Convention date, April 8. [Class 12 (iii)] In a lubricator such as for the bearings of high - speed machine tools, e.g. grinders, the lubricant is atomized into an average particle diameter of between 2 and 20 microns and an average mass of 7.32 X 10-<SP>12</SP> grams to form a fog-like suspension in a gas or air. A device to so atomize the lubricant comprises a body 10 having air pipe-line inlet and outlet conduit openings 11, 12 joined by a restricted passageway 16. In this depends a stem 24 having nozzle openings 27, 28 through which lubricant is drawn, by the air stream in the passageway 16, from a bowl 19 via a felt-booted filtering tube 56, a passage 54 (not shown), a space 52, the space between a loose-fitting follower 47 and a member 41, one or more porous compressible washers 44, a bore 42 in the member 41 and a sight feed tube 37. Following atomization, the fog-like suspension is maintained in a chamber 14 sufficiently long for the larger particles to settle through an opening 32 to the bowl 19, before passing through an orifice 31 in a plate 29 to the part to be lubricated, on which it may be electrostatically precipitated. The Specification describes the physical properties of a lubricant and dimensions of a lubricator suitable for producing the required particle size, which size is further controlled by a gland-sealed adjusting screw 49, the follower 47 of which varies the density of the washers 44.
