Abstract
654,862. Well-boring apparatus. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 11, 1948, No. 29376. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1947. [Class 85] An assembly, which permits the sealing off of the lower portion of a borehole and the obtaining of a sample of fluid without the removal of the drill stem and cutter head, comprises a packer unit disposed between said stem and head and a sample bottle unit. The packer 12 is expanded when drill mud under pressure passes from within the tubular body 1 of the packer unit through one or more ports 4 when the spring-biased valves 6 are withdrawn off the seats 5. The sample bottle unit comprises. a bottle 15 which is connected to a piston guide body 20 by a body 16, and on said body slides a piston 22 carrying spring hook fingers. A piston 22 fits the bore of the drill stem so that the sample bottle unit is forced by the drill mud down the interior of the drill stem until the body 21 strikes the bottom of the bore when the piston 22 then continues to move downwards against the action of the spring 25 to cause the fingers to be forced outwards as they pass over the body 16 so that they engage and force downwardly the heads 11 of the valves 6, so permitting expansion of the packer. Further downward movement of the piston causes it to engage and force down rods 27 that are connected to a valve 33 so that this valve opens to permit a sample of fluid to pass upwards through the passage 40 and by the non-return valve 42 into the bottle. On decreasing the fluid pressure in the drill stem, the plunger is moved upwards by the spring 28, the valve 33 closes and the spring fingers contract so freeing the valves of the ports 4.
