Abstract

654,246. Making pellets from finely-divided solids. MONSANTO CHEMICAL CO. April 11, 1947, No. 9697. Convention date, July 19, 1943. [Class 87 (ii)] Pellets of phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride, naphthalene, para dichlorobenzene, phenol, and other substances having a sharp crystallizing point, are continuously formed by initially supplying material 10 in a finelydivided form to a rotary drum 11, and continuously supplying additional material, in molten form, through a tube 17 into a region A, Fig. 2, of the material 10. The molten material is fed at such a rate as to maintain the material in the region A in a plastic state. This region is maintained at a temperature between the melting-point and about 30‹ C. below the melting point of the material. The drum is rotated at such a speed that the solid material moves up the rising side of the drum and falls over inwardly, thereby forming the region A, which has relatively restricted circulation. The temperature of the mass in addition to being controlled by adjusting the flow of the molten mass may be controlled by cooling the drum, e.g. by spraying it with water, or by separating some of the pellets formed, cooling them, and returning them to the drum. If small pellets are desired, the temperature is allowed to rise. The drum is preferably tilted a little, not more than 30 degrees, and by adjusting this angle, it is possible to selectively remove from the drum the larger pellets. The pellets are removed by a screw conveyer 20 to a barrel 19. Specification 654,272 is referred to.
