[Classes 8(i) and 8(ii)] In a suction cleaner of the horizontal tubular casing type having at one end a suction, creating unit and at the other end a filter bag 31, Fig. 1, and wherein dirt shaken therefrom is removed, on upending the cleaner, through an end normally closed by a cap 14, the filter shaking mechanism comprises a sliding guide 40, 46 alongside the filter 31 carrying an arm 44 projecting from it between the filter and the suction creating means and supporting the movable end of the filter so that it can move longitudinally whilst being constrained and remain parallel to a given direction, a spring 48 acting on the guide to keep the filter taut and a handle 50 situted at the end remote from the filter and rigidly connected to move with the guide 40 and the movable end of the filter. The thrust surface of the handle 50 is inclined at 55 so that when a pin 51 by which the handle is secured to the guide 40 reaches a stop 56 the handle tends to slide from the surface 55 to allow a snap return of the filter bag 31. In a modification the handle thrust surface comprises a retractable pad 63, Fig. 7, pivoted to the handle body 60 and held in a projected position as shown by a spring-loaded latch lever 70 until at the end of the stroke, when the latch is released and the pad is retracted to assist disengagement of the hand from the handle. An exhaust port 13 is adapted to act as a socket for a blowing hose.
