Abstract

Aluminium or aluminium alloy sheets particularly for aircraft are electrically spot welded by first cleaning the surfaces chemically or mechanically to reduce the surface resistivity then applying an interlayer to render the joints fluid-proof or corrosion resisting and then effecting the spot welds. Cleaning may be effected by first de-greasing in trichlorethylene vapour for three minutes then immersing in an alkaline cleaner such as M.O.S. Specification D.T.D. 901B, Appendix II or trisodium phosphate solution at 85 DEG C to 95 DEG C, then washing in cold running water, then immersing in a pickling solution of 10 per cent of sulphuric acid, 2 per cent of sodium dichromate and 0.1 per cent of hydrofluoric acid for three to six minutes at 140 DEG F, again washing first in cold running water and then in hot distilled water at 180 DEG F to raise the parts to such temperature and then drying in a heated air oven. The final cleaning may be effected by a wire brush rotated by a compressed-air motor.
