Abstract

653,978. Load-handling apparatus. TAYLOR, J. H. Aug. 14, 1948, No. 21492. [Class 78 (iii)] [Also in Group I] The individual tines of a hay sweep or the like are mounted in the tool-bar to have angular movement therein so that each tine follows the contour of the ground. At the end of the draw-bar 1 of a tractor forward of the rear axle 2 is mounted at each side a bracket 3 on which is pivoted a toolbar supporting arm 4 carrying a channel-section tool-bar 5. Links 6, 7 connect the arms 4 to power-lift arms 8 of known form. Through holes in the flanges of the tool-bar pass tines 9 of smaller diameter than the holes. The tines are tubes containing vertical strengthening webs. Bolts 10 welded to the supported ends of the tines project through the tool-bar and carry springs 11 compressed by nuts 12. Instead of using the bolts 10, the tines may be carried through front and rear flanges of the tool-bar, springs 14 being arranged between the flanges with transverse pins 13 anchoring the tines in position. Two other methods of mounting the tines are described. Extensions of the tool-bar may be provided to give a wider sweep. Shorter tines may be used for grass-sweeping. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the tool-bar is a tube 19 supported by a frame 20. Tubes 21 pass transversely through the tool-bar and are rigidly held therein. The tines 9 loosely fit in these tubes and are anchored by transverse pins 22, Fig. 6, which allow up-and-down movement of the tines.. The frame 20 is pivotally mounted on a frame 24 pivoted on a bracket 25 corresponding to bracket 3 of Fig. 1. On the upper frame member 24a of the frame 24 is a bracket 26 on which pivots a lever 27 adapted to co-operate with a locking arm 28 on the frame 20. Extension frames 29, 30 are bolted to the frame 20 and carry short tool-bar lengths 31, 32 each supporting additional tines. In use the lever 27 is raised and allows the locking arm 28 to rise under the pull of the frame 20 which then swings outwards so that the tines contact the ground. To raise the tines the lifting gear is operated to lower the frame 24 until its upper end abuts the upper end of the frame 20, whereupon the locking arm slides over the frame 24 where it is held by the lever 27. The lifting gear is then operated to raise the two frames into the inoperative position (Fig. 5). Alternative means for attaching the tool-bar to the tractor are described. The tool-bar may also be mounted at the front of the tractor.
