Abstract
653,129. Drilling non-circular holes. FISHER, H. M. M. July 30, 1948, No. 20386. [Class 83 (iii)] A device for drilling non-circular holes by means of an end-cutting tool 10 simultaneously rotated and gyrated comprises a driving connection 44 pivotally connected to a primary driving member 38 or to the tool on a single axis normal to the axis of rotation and engaging with both rocking and sliding movement in a slot 17 in a part integral with or connected to the tool or the member, the slot having its longer dimensions normal to the plane of rocking movement. The device is supported by a bracket 48 adapted to be clamped to the bed of a drilling machine and having a split clamp 47 engaging a sleeve 22, the latter being keyed to the clamp by a key 52 which can be placed at different angular positions round the sleeve to allow adjustment of the angular position of the hole to be drilled. Keyed to the sleeve are two spaced guides 23, 30 with pattern holes 24, 31, the lower guide being fixed by grubscrews 28 and the upper guide 31 sliding downwards with the tool against a spring 35. The tool is attached to a collar 16 by a circular or polygonal locating shoulder 19, by a tongue 14 engaging the lower part of the slot 17 in the collar and by a grub-screw 20. The primary driving member 38 comprises a socket having a taper shank 40 and within it a bar 44 is pivoted at 46 and has a tongue 43 engaged in the slot 17 in the collar. This coupling allows the gyratory and rotary movement of the collar while down-feed thrust is transmitted from a flange 41 on the socket 38 directly through the collar to the upper guide 30. Eccentric oil grooves 21 are provided for lubricating both the upper and lower faces of the collar and lubricating fluid is supplied to the tool through a nipple 55, a hole 56 in the sleeve 22 and down through the flutes 13 to the cutting edges.
