Abstract

New compounds are obtained by reacting sodium or potassium carbonate with an a -amino carboxylic acid in an aqueous medium and isolating the product. Suitable a -amino carboxylic acids are glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, phenylalanine, cysteine, methionine, tyrosine, proline, glutamic acid, lysine and histidine. The product from glycine and sodium carbonate probably has the formula <FORM:0651913/IV (b)/1> The reaction product may be isolated from the reaction mixture by cooling a hot concentrated aqueous solution or by the addition of methanol to a concentrated aqueous solution at room temperature. The new compounds are useful as intermediates in the synthesis of N-anhydrocarboxy-a -amino acid and of valuable polymeric materials. The a -amino acids may be regenerated in a purified form from the new compounds, e.g. by acidification of an aqueous solution thereof followed by crystallization and filtration; or the reaction product may be converted by treatment with barium hydroxide into the corresponding barium product which may be boiled in aqueous solution to regenerate the amino acid. In the examples: (1) sodium carbonate is reacted with (a) glycine, (b) l-leucine, (c) dl-alanine, (d) a -amino-isobutyric acid, (e) phenyl alanine; and (2) the reaction product of (a) sodium carbonate and glycine is treated with saturated aqueous barium hydroxide solution; pure glycine is obtained by boiling an aqueous solution of the barium product; and (b) Na2CO3 and l-leucine is warmed with water, and hydrogen chloride and more water are then added; the mixture is heated and on cooling purified l-leucine separates. Specification 651,914 is referred to.
