Abstract

Oxazolines are made by (1) heating amino hydroxy compounds with fatty acids at 150 DEG to 170 DEG C. and then heating the so-formed amide at around 250 DEG C.; (2) reacting an amino hydroxy compound with a nitrile. Oxazolidines are made by reacting one mol. of an amino monohydric alcohol with one mol. of an aldehyde. Specified aminohydroxy compounds are mono-ethanol amine, propanol amine, 2-methyl - 2 - amino - 1 - propanol, 2 - ethyl - 2 - amino - 1 - propanol, 2 - amino - 1 - butanol, 2 - amino - 1 - pentanol, 2 - amino - 1 - ethanol, 2 - amino - 3 - butanol, 3 - amino - 4 - pentanol, 3-amino-4-hexanol and 2-amino-3-heptanol. Specified fatty acids are acetic, propionic, butyric, caproic, heptoic, caprylic, pelargonic, capric, undecylic, lauric, tridecylic, myristic, pentadecylic, palmitic, stearic, nonadecylic, arachidic, acrylic, butenic, crotonic, pentenic, tiglic, hexenic, teracrylic, hypogeic, oleic and erucic. The nitriles may be alkyl, aryl, alkoxyalkane, aralkoxy, alkoxyalkane nitrile, e.g. (ethoxy methoxy) ethane nitrile, (ethoxy ethoxy) octane nitrile, (methoxy methoxy) ethane nitrile and nitriles of hexane, octane, decane, dodecane, tetradecane, hexadecane and octadecane. Specified aldehydes are formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, ethyl hexaldehyde, and propionaldehyde. Salts of the above oxazolines and oxazolidines are used in non-drying coating and lubricating compositions. Specification 607,013, [Group III], is referred to.ALSO:A non-drying metal coating and lubricating composition comprises a non-aqueous organic medium containing in an amount of not more than 10 per cent by weight of the total composition a polyhydric alcohol partial ester having at least 12 carbon atoms in the molecule, a melting point below 200 DEG F. and at least two free hydroxyl radicals separated by not more than three intervening atoms, and a salt of an organic nitrogen-containing base and an organic acid to solubilize the ester in the medium, the salt being present in the smallest amount necessary to hold the partial ester in solution at any chosen temperature. The esters may be derived from alcohols such as glycerine, erythritol, penta-erythritol, mannitol, sorbitol, sorbitan, or citric acid, and acids such as capric, citronellic, undecylic, undecylenic, lauric, tridecylic, myristic, myristolenic, pentadecylic, palmitic, palmitolenic, therapinic, oleic, elaidic, erucic, stearic, abietic, naphthenic, sulphonic, alkyl sulphuric, alkyl phosphoric, or phosphoric. Specified esters are glycerol mono-oleate, sorbitan mono-oleate, and penta-erythritol di-oleate. The medium may be mineral oil or spirit, seal oil, paraffin, petrolatum, soap thickened grease, petroleum naphtha cuts, gas oils, waxes, kerosene sulphur dioxide extract, benzene, o-, p-, m-xylene, cumene, butyl benzene, n-hexane, dimethyl pentane, octane, nonane, undecane, dodecane, cyclohexane, methylcyclohexane, isopropylcyclohexane, chlorinated kerosene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, olefin polymers, polymerized alkylene oxides, 2-ethylhexyl sebacate, ethyl ricinoleate or dioctyl phthalate. The salts may be those formed by combining any of the following acids, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, hydroxy stearic, ricinoleic, oleic, lactic, alkyl malonic, alkyl succinic, citric, amyl sulphonic, tri-isopropyl naphthalene sulphonic or petroleum sulphonic acid (mahogany acids) with any of the following bases, monocyclohexyl-, dicyclohexyl-, tricyclohexyl-, cyclohexylolelyl - diamyl cyclohexylamine; ethyloctyl-, dioctyl-, dibutyl-, propyl butyl-isoxazole; 2-heptyl-, tridecyl-, 2-octyl-, 2 - hendecyl - (4 - hydroxylmethyl - 4 - ethyloxazoline); 2-octyl-, 2-hendecyl-oxazoline; 2-hendecyl -, 2 - heptadecyl - (4,4 - dimethyloxazoline); 2 - pentyl - 4,5 - dimethyl - 4 - hexanooxyethyl - 2 - oxazoline; 2 - undecyl - 4-methyl - 4 - lauroxymethyl - 2 - oxazoline; 2 - undecyl - 4,4 - dimethyl - 5 - phenyl - 2-oxazoline; methyl-, ethyl-, diethyl-octyloxazole; diheptyloxazole; or butyl-, diethyl-, diheptyl-, ethyloctyl-, propyloctyl-oxazolidine. Specified salts are dicyclohexyl ammonium oleate, dicyclohexylamine oleate, diisopropylammonium oleate. Metals specified are steel and aluminium. Specification 607,013 is referred to.
