[Class 56] CdF 2 in amount between 10 and 35 mols per cent is added to the batch ingredients of the glasses described in the parent Specification and the atomic fluorine-phosphorus ratio is not less than 0.4; refractive indices between 1.55 and 1.61 and Abbe values between 60 and 68 are thereby obtained. The batch may contain the following ingredients, the ranges given being molecular percentages and the specific examples percentages by weight :-CdF 2 10-35, 11.8, 23.7; BaF 4 23-71, 57.8, 41.5; Al (PO 3 ) 3 14-35, 30.4, 34.8. Specification 649,511 is referred to.
