Abstract
649,251. Shuttleless smallware looms. TALON, Inc. April 15, 1947, No. 9976. Convention date, Dec. 22, 1945. [Classes 142(i) and 142(ii)] In a ribbon loom, measured loops of weft are inserted by a weft needle having a straight front edge which beats up the preceding pick; the shed begins to change as the weft needle enters, and is completely changed by the time the needle is one-third of its way out of the shed. The free ends of the weft loops are knitted together by a bearded needle. Weft inserting.-The weft needle 100, Figs. 14 and 14a, has an eye 105 situated close to shoulders 103, (against which the weft thread runs) and has a straight thin front edge 104. The needle is carried by a block 106, Fig. 12, which is reciprocated in a cylinder 109 by a crank-operated connecting rod 124; the cylinder is mounted on a vertical shaft 114 which is oscillated by a cam so that the weft needle enters the shed along a curved path which brings it up to the fell, causing its edge 104 to press on the crossed warp threads and so force the preceding pick into place; the needle leaves the shed along a straight line at a slight angle to the fell. Measuring and tensioning weft, Fig. 11.- As the weft needle is being withdrawn from the shed, a cam-oscillated arm 171, pulls sufficient weft for the next pick through a tension device 150 comprising spring-loaded discs, a cam-operated rod 160 having relieved the spring loading; when the weft needle enters the shed, the arm 171 pays out the measured loop F and the full spring load is restored to the tension device to prevent weft being drawn from the supply. Shedding mechanism, Fig. 7.-Heald frames 68 are carried as described in Specification 649,318 by jacks 50, each actuated by a cam 37 through a lever 33 having a toothed extremity engaging rack teeth on the jack. To obtain a minimum front-to-rear dimension of the shedding mechanism, the jacks slide on one another, the cams 37 being disposed on four shafts and staggered to provide clearance for the levers 33. Guiding warp, Fig. 5-Before reaching the heddles, the warp passes through a reed 80. Breast beam, Fig. 5.-The edge of the ribbon at which the selvedge knitting operates is held in contact with a breast beam 200 by a wire 207; or a holding-down plate, the full width of the ribbon, may be used. Take-up motion, Fig. 5.-The ribbon is drawn forward by nip rollers 254, 257 which. are geared together and driven by change wheels. The roller 254 is carried by a spring-loaded arm 263 resting against an adjustable stop.
