Abstract

648,967. Suction cleaners. HOOVER, Ltd. July 17, 1947, No. 19118. Convention date, July 19, 1946. [Class 8(i)] A motor fan suction cleaner includes a germicidal lamp 28 for sterilizing the surface cleaned or the dirt removed therefrom. The lamp is fitted with an aluminium reflector 38 and projects a wide shallow beam of ultra violet light of wavelength between 2,500 and 4,000 angstrom units through a quartz window 29 on to the surface being cleaned. A fluorescent portion 30 of the window 29 serves as a pilot indicator. A second lamp 28 shielded at 78 against attrition of air-borne dust entering the cleaner dust bag 15 sterilizes this dust prior to its filtration. A lamp 28 may also be located so as to irradiate dust-laden air passing through a converter to the fan eye during off the floor cleaning. The lamps are wired in parallel with each other and with the motor armatures and in series with the motor field winding. Alternatively the lamp or lamps are in parallel with the motor and in series with a filament lamp serving as a dirt finder and acting as ballast resistance. Alternating current supply is controlled by an automatic handle-controlled delay switch. Ozone generated by the rays assists sterilization.
