Abstract

648,339. Closet-seat guards. GERADTS, L. M. E. J. H., and TROMP, G. M. Jan. 29, 1948, No 2723. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1947: [Class 26] A closet-seat is mounted to be depressed under load and is furnished with means for feeding paper or other protective material in strip form over the rim of the seat as a consequence of the automatic rising of the seat when the load is removed, mechanism being provided for cutting off used material during each such operation of the seat. The material may cover the the front of the seat, or it may be fed over each side of the rim, separate feeding means and cutting mechanism being provided for each side. The depression of seat 1 causes the cutting edge 11 of a lever 6 to coact with a knife 12 to cut off any part of the strip P hanging beyond the said knife 12. The outer extremity of the lever 6 engages a projection of a pivoted segment in which is a recess, the teeth on one side of which engage a pinion to rotate a rod 19 to wind a coiled spring 21 surrounding and connected at its inner end to the rod 19, the outer end being secured to a cylindrical housing 22 enclosing the spring and attached to a supporting plate 20 for the rod 19. A sleeve 23 freely rotatable on the rod 19 carries a ratchet-wheel at one end cooperating with a pawl 25 (not shown) pivotally mounted by means of a bolt surrounded by a distant-piece 27 to keep the said wheel and pawl co-planar, and at the other end has secured to it a friction roller 4 with a rubber surface 5. The portion of the rod 19 in the roller 4 is of larger diameter and has a recess 28 containing a pin 30 and a spring 29 to function as a pawl, the presence of which in the deeper part of the recess 28 causes the friction roller 4 to remain stationary, and hence the sleeve 23. The ratchet-wheel on the sleeve 23 is engaged by the pawl 25 when the lever 6 has turned sufficiently. The seat rises under the action of a spring 7, and after sufficient turning of the lever 6 the pawl 25 (not shown) is caused to disengage the ratchet-wheel, the spring 21 is thus unwound, the rod 19 is rotated so that the roller 4, now coupled with the pivot 19 by the pawl 30, rotates to bring fresh material P over the seat.
