Abstract
648,209. Enamels and glazes. DRAKENFELD & CO., Inc., B. F. Dec. 17, 1948, No. 32683. Convention date, Jan. 8. [Class 56] A decorative ceramic colour vehicle composition comprises a dispersion of vitrifiable glaze in a heat-liquefiable thermoplastic resin, and is solid at normal temperatures and heat liquefiable to prepare it for application to an article to be decorated, and solidifies quickly on contact with the article to permit the application of further colour without intermediate drying or heating. It is preferred to use resinous wood products and excellent results are obtained with hydrogenated wood rosin, one form of which melts at 168‹F. The melting point may be lowered by compounding with the hydrogenated rosin a hydrogenated ester of rosin, suitably the methyl ester. When this compound is tacky an amide of stearic acid may be added as a tack reducer. A suitable composition for use with the silk screen method contains equal parts by weight of the three particular ingredients given above, and is a solid resembling beeswax at room temperatures and liquifies at 85‹C. The ground ceramic colour is stirred into the heated compound which may then be used with the silk screen or squeegee process and quickly solidifies on contact with the cold article to be decorated. Several colours may be thus applied, without intermediate drying, and the article fired. To avoid premature solidification heat, as from infra red lamps, may be applied to the stencil screen. Other compositions may be used, but preferably all fuse at 100‹C or less, and must sharply reproduce the stencil design, must not affect the colour, must keep, and must volatize on firing without leaving any sensible carbon residue. The composition may also include plasticizers and levelling-off agents.
