Abstract

648,023. Photo-electric photometer. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Nov. 8, 1948, No. 28967. [Class 40 (iii)] A meter for measuring the output of a lamp in a particular spectral region, e.g. ultra-violet light of wavelength 2537 Angstroms, comprises two photo-cells connected in opposition, both cells being equally responsive to the spectrum outside the selected region and one only being responsive to that region. As shown, the meter has the bottom of its housing 3 so formed as to sit astride the lamp, two photo-cells 9 and 10 being mounted in a recess in the housing and connected in series, with a microammeter 17 connected across their junction. Cell 9 is covered with a quartz plate transmitting ultra-violet and cell 10 with a glass plate which does not, both plates being backed with a suitable phosphor layer such as manganese activated zinc silicate which fluoresces under ultra-violet radiation. The effect of visible light is thus cancelled out while, since only the backing on the quartz plate fluoresces, the microammeter gives a direct indication of the ultra-violet content of the light. A resistor may be provided in shunt with the meter for calibration purposes.
