Abstract
Potassium salts are recovered as potassium carbonate from waste fermentation liquors by concentrating the liquors, e.g. to a solids content of 50 to 60 per cent, burning the concentrate with a limited amount of air and converting the potassium sulphide thus formed to the carbonate by carbonation. The combustion may be effected continuously by causing the concentrated liquor to fall through the hot combustion gases into the combustion zone of the furnace used; the molten residue from the furnace may then be dissolved in water and reacted with carbon dioxide to form potassium carbonate, which may be recovered in solid form, and hydrogen sulphide which may be recovered per se. The combustion gases may be used, e.g. for producing steam in a boiler for concentrating the liquor. Potassium sulphate may be added to the waste liquor before or after concentration.
