Abstract

647,583. Radiolocation. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. May 9, 1947, No. 12668. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (vii)] In F.M. radar systems of the kind wherein the frequency of transmitted continuous wave energy is linearly varied during transmission (e.g. saw-tooth or triangular modulation) and received reflected energy is combined with energy then being transmitted to produce a beat-frequency which is a measure of the distance of the reflecting target, it has been found that the periodic discontinuities in frequency variation cause sharp beat note voltage and phase changes which have a high harmonic content and cause false echo indications. A further defect in such systems is the spreading of echo " blips " on the cathode-ray tube screen due to non-rectilinearity in the limits of transmitter modulation when the frequency deviation is large. The present invention overcomes these defects by providing means whereby the radar system is smoothly rendered inoperative or of substantially reduced sensitivity during the short periods of discontinuity and regions of non-rectilinearity in the variation of the transmitted frequency. This is done by the application of a control voltage (synchronized with the transmitter modulator and preferably substantially sinusoidal) in any convenient manner known per se to reduce smoothly either the transmitted amplitude or the receiver gain, or both, during the said short periods. This voltage may be derived from a separate source or directly from the transmitter modulator. Specification 541,399 is referred to and Specifications 620,568 and 621,846 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
