Abstract

647,276. Severing non-metallic sheet material by burning. JOHNSON BROS. (HANLEY), Ltd., and BIRD, G. W. Dec. 19, 1947, No. 33614. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group XI] A device for separating from a printed sheet or a strip of paper transfers, the area defined by each pattern or design, comprises a plate 5 of ceramic material having an electric resistance 6 attached to one of its surfaces and arranged so as to surround the area defined by the pattern or design, the plate being movable towards and away from a support having a non-inflammable surface on which a printed sheet or transfer paper may be placed and against which the plate is pressed to move the resistance element into contact with the printed sheet or transfer to separate the pattern or design by burning. The element may be in the form of a wire which is of small mesh size or has a knife edge part for contacting the paper. Alternatively the element may be in the form of a thin metal strip or ribbon 6 partly embedded in or secured to the ceramic plate 5. The strip 6 may be bent into angle section, one of the flanges serving to anchor the strip to the base-plate. A rib-like part 19 ensures that no part of the base comes into contact with the design printed on the sheet so that smudging is prevented and any possibility of adhesion between the sheet and the base eliminated. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 an intermittently-driven endless belt 28 conveys the sheet 39 step-by-step below the separating device 5, the 'conveyer belt being made of asbestos fibre or other non-inflammable woven material. The transfer strip is held flat on the conveyer belt by suction created in a chamber 32 by a vacuum pump 34 which draws air through a perforated table 31 (forming the top of the chamber 32) dnd also through the fabric belt above it. The separating device 5 is reciprocated vertically either by means of a handle 22 or automatically in synchronism with the movement of the conveyer belt.
