Abstract

645,970. Vehicle wheels. FROST & CO., Ltd., H., and NEWMAN, L. C. May 28, 1948, No. 14485. [Class 144 (i)] A device for use in manipulating tyres on wheel rims comprises a series of rim-engaging jaws 22, 23, 24 at the outer ends of links 12, 13, 14 which are pivoted at their inner ends on a plate 10 welded &c. to a vertical spindle 6 passing through a table 2 on which the wheel is laid. Radial adjustment of the jaws, to grip or release the wheel, is effected by rotation of the spindle 6 to vary the throw of the links 12 which are guided between pairs of headed pins 12<SP>11</SP>, 13<SP>11</SP>, 14<SP>11</SP>. As shown, the spindle is actuated by a bolt 18 (having an operating- handle 19) threaded through a nut 17 swivelled on a radius arm 16 at the lower end of the spindle. It is stated that other operating- means such as an electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic motor, or a pedal-actuated device may be used for adjusting the wheel-grippers. The actual tyre-manipulating device consists of a lever 25 having a curved end 27, for engaging under the tyre-bead, and fitted with a roller 33 which is adapted to engage the spindle 6 in the tyre-removing operation, as shown in Fig. 7 ; or, to traverse the tyre-bead for forcing this into the rim, as shown in Fig. 8. For the latter operation, the lever has a hole 26 for assembly on the spindle where it is restrained at the desired height by means of a pin 36 engaging a selected hole 37 in the spindle.
