Abstract

A machine of the type claimed in the parent Specification comprises a housing enclosing the work-feeding and inking mechanisms and having a narrow opening through which a work-piece is presented to the work-feeding mechanism and having outer surfaces inclined towards the opening to guide the work-pieces to the opening. One feed roll is spring-pressed towards the other and is mounted on a treadle-operated support so that the rolls may be separated. The roll may be adjusted to fix the distance apart of the rolls. A guard is also provided on one side of the inking roll to prevent work-pieces being deflected. The edge of a sole S, Fig. 4, is fed by rolls 12 and 14 to an inking roll 10. The roll 12 is made of a yielding material, e.g. rubber, and its position is determined by the engagement of pin 84 with a portion 86 of a sleeve 88 which slides in the carrier sleeve 74 and is adjusted by a screw-pin 90. A compression spring 94, adjustable independently of the cross-pin 84 and the screw 90, provides yielding pressure for the roll 12. Roll 14 is rigid and is supported on a yoke 22, Fig. 2, carried by a bracket 28 capable of heightwise adjustment. Adjustment of the yoke 22 is also possible to bring the roll 14 directly above a flange 38 on the side of the inking roll, the flange carrying ink for coating the margin as well as the peripheral edge of the sole. The feed-rolls are driven by an endless belt 102 passing over pulleys 62 and 76 and over pulley 104 which is driven by belt 114 from a <PICT:0645451/III/1> trough 140, Fig. 3, which merges with a cup 142 which receives ink from the inverted bottle 146. The position of the trough and inking roll is determined by a screw 160. The quantity of ink on the roll 10 is controlled by a scraper plate, and a guide member 180 prevents motor, not shown. A treadle, not shown, operates a rod 134 connected to a lever 26 which carries the roll 12 and effects separation of the rolls. The inking roll 10 is mounted in a <PICT:0645451/III/2> <PICT:0645451/III/3> deflection of flimsy soles. The machine cover parts 184 and 186, Fig. 2, contain a gap through which the work-pieces are presented.
