Abstract
A fumigating composition consists of a mixture comprising a thermally vapourizable pesticidal or insect-repellent compound and grains comprising ammonium nitrate and charcoal in which grains the ammonium nitrate is at least partly absorbed by the charcoal and in which mixture the quantity of the pesticide or insecticide is insufficient to render the grains self-combustible. The grains may be obtained by milling a moist mixture of ammonium nitrate and charcoal, and drying the product. The preferred pesticidal compounds are D.D.T. and hexachlorocyclohexane. An ignition-aiding reagent such as potassium nitrate or ammonium bichromate may be included in the composition. The temperature of combustion may be lowered by incorporating china clay or common salt in the grains. The composition may be formed into a cartridge containing an igniting composition and a fuze. The fumigating charge may be in a compact form or may be lightly compacted into a cartridge having a wrapper of paper or regenerated cellulose. Specification 584,853 is referred to.
