Abstract

645,004. Calculating-apparatus. VICTOR ADDING MACHINE CO. June 12, 1947, No. 15507. Convention date, July 4, 1939. [Class 106 (i)] A calculating machine has a keyboard, differentially movable actuator means controllable by amounts set up in the keyboard, an accumulator comprising pinions engageable with gear sectors forming part of the actuator means, operating mechanism including a doubleacting wipe pawl to cause engagement and disengagement of the accumulator pinions and the actuator gear sectors and a main operating shaft having a forward and a return stroke. Upon depression of a key 10, Fig. 1, a slide 20 is moved rearwardly by a spring 21 to lock the depressed key by engaging in a recess 18 in the key stem 11. The keys, when depressed, serve to limit the rearward movement of actuator slides 30 each of which is connected by a plate 34 to one end of an actuator 36 which, at its other end, has a rack 46 which meshes with a segmental pinion 48 on a rotatable type segment 50 which is connected by a tension spring 56 to an adjacent gear sector 60 which is adapted to mesh with a corresponding accumulator pinion 66 rotatably mounted on a shaft 68 secured at its ends to a pair of similar arms 70. Each pinion 66 has secured thereto a disc having a transfer tooth 74 and a disc 76 having a notch 77. Transfer mechanism. Each gear sector 60 has a projection 94 which normally abuts against a projection 93 of a pawl 86. When a pawl 86 is tripped by the associated transfer tooth 74, however, the projection 94 is freed whereupon the spring 56 pulls the sector 60 clockwise, Fig. 1, until the faces 58 and 57 abut so adding " 1 " to the corresponding accumulator pinion 66. The main operating shaft 110 carries a plate 112, Fig. 6, having a stud 114 which co-operates with a wipe pawl 104 on an arm 102 fixed to a shaft 100. Upon counterclockwise rotation of the main shaft 110 the shaft 100 is, through the above connections, rotated clockwise whereupon a plate 98, Fig. 1, carried thereby effects resetting of the sectors 60 and release of the transfer pawls 86. A rod 122 extends through arcuate slots 124 in the type segments 50 and is connected at both ends by arms 126, 128 to the shaft 54. The arm 128, Fig. 2, has a segmental pinion 130 meshing with a gear 132 pivoted on a shaft 134 which carries a forked arm 136. The arrangement is such that at the end of the forward rotation of the main shaft a roller 140 on a plate 138 on the shaft 110 swings the arm 36 counterclockwise and the shaft 54 is rocked counterclockwise, Fig. 1, permitting rotation of the type segments 50 which are free. In this clockwise rotation of the operating plate 138 a roller 182 wipes past a pivoted wipe pawl 168 but on the return rotation it causes the pawl 168 to move a bail arm 172 so that the bail bar 176 pushes the slide 20 forwardly to release any depressed keys. If, however, a repeat key R, Fig. 2, is swung forwardly the pawl 168 is moved out of the path of the pin 182 and so the key setting is retained for another machine cycle. Total taking. A total key T usually in a central position is rocked forward or rearward for " total " taking and " subtotal " taking respectively, Figs. 4 and 5. During the forward rotation of the main shaft 110 the key T is locked in the position in which it is placed by a lock plate controlled by the main shaft. The right hand accumulator supporting arm 70, Fig. 1, has a pin 216, Figs. 4 and 5, which engages in a slot in a pivoted arm 220 to which is connected by a link 226 a double hooked arm 224. The arm 220 has an arm 228 controlled by the key T in such a way that when the key T is in its central position the hook 236 of the arm 224 engages a pin 238 on a rocker plate 240 and when the key T is in either of its other positions the hook 242 of the arm 224 engages a stud 244 on the rocker plate 240. A double-acting wipe pawl 248 pivoted on the plate 112, Fig. 6, co-operates with two pins 246 and 247 on the plate 240 in such a way that during an adding or " total taking " operation the plate 240 is rocked counter-clockwise then clockwise during the forward and return rotation of the shaft 110 respectively. If the key T is in its " subtotal " position a pivoted arm 256 is moved over the pin 247 to prevent the clockwise movement of the rocker plate 240 in the return rotation of the main shaft 110. In the above three operations the position of the double hooked arm 224 ensures the correct movement of the accumulator arms 70 to ensure correct tuning of the engagement and disengagement of the accumulators 66 and their sectors 60. A cam plate 270, Fig. 6, on the plate 112 engages a roller 268 on one arm of a bell-crank lever 264, the other arm of which co-operates with a stud 262 on one accumulator arm 70 to lock the accumulator pinions 66 in and out of mesh. When the key T is moved to its " total " or "subtotal" position the bail bar 176 is rocked to move the slide 20 forwardly to release the keys and a cross bar 290 locks the bars 20 in this position. The additional end actuator 36, Fig. 1, not associated with a keybank, is normally held against movement by a latch 306 which is tripped during a " total " or " subtotal " taking operation. A hook 318, Fig. 5, is moved to hold the type segments 50, during " total " or " subtotal " taking operations, of the denominations above that of the highest digit to prevent printing of their zeros. A type plate carrying the type " T " and " S " is set by the key T to print the corresponding signs for " totalling " and " subtotalling " during the succeeding machine cycle.
