Abstract

644,142. Carbon papers. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd. Oct. 27, 1947, No. 28701. [Class 100 (iv)] A carbon paper is on the reverse face to that carrying the transfer coating, provided with a coating of flexible oil-repellent material. The oil repellent layer does not exert capillary attraction on the plasticizer of the transfer coating of an adjacent part of the paper when it is in roll form after manufacture, and so facilitates " ageing " of the papers. It is preferred that the layer should also be water repellent. A suitable composition consists of 80 parts by weight of zinc oleostearate and 20 parts by weight of copper resinate. The latter constituent may be replaced wholly or in part by magnesium stearate or cobalt resinate. Colouring matter, e.g. aluminium powder in the form of lining powder and green lake may be included in the composition to distinguish the two sides of the paper, or the colour may be applied separately and over part of the paper only. Other optional constituents are (a) material such as kieselguhr, argillaceous earth chalk, lithopone, ground aluminium or bronze powder to increase the surface friction of the backing coat ; (b) wax, such as carnauba up to 20 per cent, and (c) a drying agent which can be a metallic soap and may, in the example given above, comprise resonates such as copper resinate or naphthanates or linoleates. The metallic soap may be applied with or without solvents.
