Abstract

644,076. Radio receiving systems. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Oct. 24, 1947,. No. 28513. [Class 40 (v)] In a diversity receiver having three or more signal channels, potentials proportional to the signal strength are derived from the signals in each channel and combined differentially with a potential derived from the signals and proportional to the strongest signal, the resultant signals being used to control a trigger circuit having the same number of stable states as there are channels, and which controls transmission means in each channel so that only the strongest signal channel is used for reception. Radio, intermediate frequency or low frequency signals from each of the channels A, B and C are passed to detector units AD, BD and CD respectively, so that potentials proportional to the peak signal strengths are produced across the rectifier loads AD4, BD4, CD4. Rectifiers AD6, BD6 and CD6 are associated with a common load ABC2, ABC3, across which is developed a potential proportional to the strongest signal. These potentials are combined in opposition, the resulting potential, which is positive, or in the case of the strongest signal, zero, being fed respectively to the control grids of cathode follower valves V4, V5 and V6. The outputs from the cathodes of valves V4, V5 and V6 are applied to the control grids of valves V1, V2 and V3. The grids of each of the valves V1, V2 and V3 is connected to the anodes of the other two valves, so that this arrangement forms a trigger circuit having three states of equilibrium in which two valves are conducting and one is cut-off. The anodes of valves V1, V2, and V3 are connected respectively to gating circuits A3, B3, C3, the arrangement being such that signals are passed to the common output circuit from one channel only, at any one time. The differential potentials, by controlling the operation of the trigger circuit, ensure that the output is taken from the strongest signal channel.
