Abstract

642,367. Scaffolding. KWIKFORM, Ltd. Oct. 2, 1945, Nos. 21213/46 (divided out of 642,362) and 34361/45. [Class 20(ii)] A scaffold frame unit comprises two vertical tubular members 21, 22 rigidly and permanently connected together by a horizontal member 23 which is nearer the upper end of each of the vertical members than to the lower end, bracing members 35 being rigidly and permanently c o n - nected to the horizontal and vertical members, said horizontal member 23 being adapted to support a platform or staging extending transversely of the frame unit, the latter having a pair of clamping devices 25 secured permanently thereto and comprising clamping screws 31 to engage tubular ledgers 29 extending to secure the unit to a similar frame unit or other structure, the clamping devices 25 being disposed one adjacent to each junction between the members 21 or 22 and 23 so that they can support the ledgers in a position relative to the member 23 of each unit for carrying putlogs 46 parallel to the members 23 and at the same level to provide a level support for the platform or staging nearer the top than to the bottom of the frame unit, the clamping devices 25 being as described in Specification 642,388. The frame unit has a support enabling vertical adjustment which comprises vertical metal bars 36 extending into the vertical members 21 and 22, plates 37 which form feet for the bars 36, each bar being of polygonal section and twisted about its axis to form in effect a multi-start screw thread of large pitch, and sockets 38 threaded on to the bars 36 and having flanges 40 which engage the lower ends of the vertical members 21, 22 and locking screws 39 to secure the frame unit in its adjusted position. Instead of the bracing members 35 a pair of horizontal bracing members 48 may join the vertical members 21 and 22, and instead of plates the feet 37 may be of the form shown in Fig. 5 and comprise horizontal bracing members 50. The twisted bars 36 may be lengthened and extend through and beyond the tops of the members 21 and 22. Additional clamping devices 25 may be incorporated at the junctions between the vertical members and the horizontal bracing members. To form a scaffolding structure a number of scaffold frame units 20 are arranged as shown in Fig. 9 and connected either by the ledgers 29 or by frame units 55 similar to the units 20 but without the clamping devices, the adjacent vertical members of the frame units 20 and 55 being clamped together by clamps 59 as described in Specification 581,429 and the abutment between the members 56 and 21 or 22 being possible because the width of the clamps 25 is less than the diameter of the members 21, 22 as described in Specification 642,388. The vertical members 21 and 22 may have spigots 41 which can enter the lower ends of the tubular vertical members of another frame unit so that frame units may be assembled vertically one above the other. Shuttering plates may be clamped to a scaffold frame unit, as described in Specification 570,661, to apply the construction to the casting or facing of walls. The putlogs 46 are secured to the ledgers 29 by clamps 47 which do not project above the level of the putlogs, as described in Specification 642,366. The second Provisional Specification mentions a spigot-and-collar device, incorporating a twisted bar, for connecting ledgers end-toend; and that standard frame units of different widths and heights may be used. Specifications 570,661, 586,366 and 642,387 also are referred to.
