Abstract
641,926. Resistances; neutron detectors. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Aug. 17, 1948, No. 21657. [Class 37] [Also in Group XL (a)] A neutron detector consists of a temperaturevariable resistance formed of, or coated with, a material that absorbs neutrons to produce heat so that the neutrons produce a change of resistance. Preferably the resistance is formed of, or includes in its composition, B<SP>10</SP>. In a preferred form, a bridge comprises four equal resistances, those in one pair of opposite arms being of B<SP>10</SP>, while the other pair are of B<SP>11</SP>; the resistances 9 are mounted on an axis 4 having slotted drums 3, 6 of neutron absorbing material, e.g. cadmium; the drum 6 being rotated at a speed of 1-10 revs./sec. so that the resistances 9 are intermittently exposed to any neutron radiation; the output of the bridge is modulated in accordance with the speed of rotation of drum 6 and the.presence of neutrons, and is unaffected by variations in ambient temperature.
