Abstract

Hydroxyketones are prepared by the hydration of the triple bond of an acetylenic alcohol of the general formula <FORM:0640477/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 represent alkyl radicals or may together form a hydroaromatic ring, by mixing together an aqueous solution of mercuric sulphate acidified with sulphuric acid with such an alcohol, the mixing being performed wholly at a temperature below 35 DEG C., and the amount of sulphuric acid including that which is in the form of mercuric sulphate being not over 64.4 grams per one gram molecular proportion of such alcohol, heating said mixture for about two hours to complete the said hydration, steam distilling the hydroxy ketone produced, and thereafter separating the hydroxyketone from the steam distillate. The group R1 may contain a plurality of carbon atoms, and the group R2 may represent the methyl group. The hydroxyketone may be isolated from the steam distillate by adsorbtion on active charcoal or silica gel, or by extraction with an ester which is insoluble in water, or by azeotropic dehydration with a solvent such as benzene or carbon tetrachloride. In the examples the following compounds are prepared: 3 : 3-dimethyl-3-hydroxy propanone-2, 1-acetyl-cyclohexanol, 3-isobutyl-3-butanol-2-one, and 3-ethyl-3-butanol-2-one. The last-named compound is obtained from 3-ethinyl-butinol-3 in admixture with methyl ethyl ketone and an unsaturated ketone of the formula <FORM:0640477/IV (b)/2>
