640,207. Electromagnetic ammeters and voltmeters; battery charge indicators. GRUCHY, J. N. DE, and EVERETT, EDGCUMBE, & CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1948, No. 5240. [Class 37] A battery charge indicator is responsive to a main torque proportional to battery terminal voltage and an assisting compensating torque variable in terms of battery internal resistance or battery voltage and related to the volt drop in the battery due to load current. As shown, a moving coil 1 is connected through a resistance 3 across the battery terminals so that the torque on coil 1 is proportional to battery terminal voltage, and a moving coil 2 secured to coil 1 is connected across a resistance 5 in the load circuit and acted upon by a torque proportional to battery volt drop whereby the total instrument torque is the sum of the torques on both coils and pointer 6 is deflected in accordance with battery E.M.F. The polepieces 7 associated with coil 2 are arranged to produce the required degree of field distortion so that the torque on coil 2 varies to take account of changes in battery internal resistance. In the alternative arrangement (not illustrated) a high torque voltage indicator operates a light contact variable resistance element to increase the current flowing in the compensation circuit at a given load as the battery voltage decreases. Contacts may be fitted to the indicator system to open or close at some predetermined battery E.M.F. and thereby alter the load conditions. It is stated that if a moving magnet or moving iron instrument is employed the compensating coil would be positioned so that it exerts a greater torque on the moving element for a given excitation current when the voltage indicator tended to a lower voltage reading.
