Abstract
639,997. Flaring the ends of thermoplastic tubes. COMMUNICATIONS PATENTS, Ltd., and ZADE, H. P. Feb. 12, 1947, No. 4098. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Groups XI, XVII and XXVIII] The end of a tube 15 of thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride is flared by softening it by highfrequency heating and subsequently or simultaneously forcing it into an annular die-passage 10, and then removing the tube, when the material is cool. The flared part of the tube may be welded to another thermoplastic member by softening part of this member by high-frequency heating. The die may consist of two semicircular metal parts 6, 7 attached to silica-loaded ebonite carriers 12, 13, and a metal base 4 having a plug portion 5 with a protuberance 9. The metal die parts and the plug 5 may form the electrodes of the high frequency heating system. The die may have passages for the circulation of cooling fluid. The cross-section of the die may be such as to modify the cross section of the tube. When the tube is to be welded to a member such as a side wall of a container, for which the tube is to form the inlet, the outer end of the passage 10 is arranged at the same level as the top surface of the base 4 and the carriers 12, 13 are spaced above this surface. The sheet which is to form the side wall of the container is placed on the base 4 with its inlet aperture, which is of smaller diameter than the outside diameter of the flared end of the tube, over the protuberance 9. The parts 6, 7 of the die are then brought together, the adjacent parts of the tube and sheet softened, and the tube forced into the die. The die may form part of an automatically operated machine. According to the Provisional Specification the upper part of the die may be formed in one piece and heating means such as an electric resistance heater may be used.
