[Class 112] [Also in Group XXX] Straws are cut off in a single layer from a stack in a reservoir 7 and transported to a conveyer 4 immediately below the reservoir for delivery to a machine 1, 2, 3 sewing straw envelopes for bottles. The aligned straws 8, of equal length, are fed down the reservoir 7 by prongs extending through slots in the reservoir and borne on chains 9 passing over pulleys 10 driven from the sewing machine. A "cutter" device 14 comprising members 15, 16 supported by rods 19 to move vertically relatively to a frame 11 is moved with the frame across the bottom of the reservoir 7, to the position indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1, a support 12 for the straws and a pointed cap 17 for the cutter 14 moving with the frame so that a single layer of straws is trapped between the member 15 (which is covered by the cap 17) and the member 16. During this motion a bar formed with prongs and pivoted to fixed guides 13 is held by a roller on the frame 11 across the bottom of the reservoir 7 so that the prongs prevent lateral movement of the straws. An arm bearing a roller and driven from the sewing machine then engages a bridge 20 at the top of the rods 19 to depress the rods together with the cutter 14, the support 12 and cap 17 remaining stationary. During the initial downward movement, a roller 25 on an arm 24 secured to the member 16 rides on a surface 26 on a guide plate 23 carried by the frame 11 so that the member 16 turns about a pivot 18 and the layer of straws is gripped between the members 15 and 16. The member 16 is of angle section having one horizontal and one upwardly extending vertical flange so that the straws are bent upwardly at right angles in the middle. The continued downward movement of the cutter 14 brings the straws to the conveyer 4 where a member 28 moves transversely across the conveyer to fold the upstanding ends of the straws over the horizontal portions. The lower part of the guide plate 23 is shaped so that the rollers 25 permit the members 15, 16 to separate, subsequent movement of the frame 11 to the right in Fig. 1 leaving the folded straws on the conveyer 4. The rods 19 and cutter 14 are then raised, positively or by springs, and the action repeated.
