Abstract

638,267. Controlling burners. SANDERS ELECTRONICS, Ltd., W. H., and HAYWARD, W. H. T. June 28, 1948, No. 17366. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] To avoid the use of a metal electrode in apparatus in which a high temperature flame forms part of an electric circuit a pilot flame is projected into the main flame to serve as the electrode. In the arrangement shown the flame 33 of a pilot burner projects into the main flame 34 of a furnace and an electric current, required by the electric control apparatus 39 described in Specification 631,894 passes through both flames. The control apparatus operates a solenoid 37 to close a fuel cock 36 for the main burner when either flame is extinguished. The pilot burner comprises a steel tube 14 projecting from a cylindrical casing 10 and electrically insulated therefrom by two insulating plates 16, 17 between which a metal collar 15 brazed to the tube 14 and connected to a terminal 23 is clamped. Holes 24, 25 in the casing afford entry for a full pipe and the electric cable. The furnace burns gaseous or liquid or pulverized fuel and the pilot burner may be supplied from an independent source.
