Abstract

638,147. Magnetic measurements. GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO. Dec. 2, 1946, Nos. 35604 and 35605. Convention dates, Dec. 8, 1945. [Class 37] Apparatus for magnetometric surveying comprises a directionally stabilized magnetometer device 112, Fig. 1, which is mounted in a trailer 111. The measured magnetic intensity is recorded on a strip recorder 113 whose chart is moved proportionally to the distance covered, by a flexible cable connected to the trailer wheels in the manner of an odometer. A second recorder 115 is responsive to time from clock 117 and elevation from barometer 116. The recorder charts may alternatively be clock driven, magnetic intensity and distance covered being recorded thereon as functions of time. A single combined chart may be used. The magnetometer 112 associated with its directional stabilizing device 120 is of the kind described in Specifications 642,649 and 642,650. In operation the apparatus is traversed along a line 101 of the earth's surface, and the magnetic anomaly associated for example with a point at which magnetic rock 107 comes closest to the surface is recorded at 123 on chart 121, Fig. 2. The apparatus may be carried by boat or pack, or may be mounted in an aircraft flying according to predetermined survey plans Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the recording chart being clock driven and the path of the aircraft with time being recorded on a map. The apparatus readings are applicable to the detection of buried metals, valuable minerals, mines and submarines.
