Abstract

637,876. Colour photography. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. June 10, 1947, No. 15284. Convention date, Oct. 16, 1946. [Class 98 (ii)] Subtractively coloured negatives incorporating correction printing masks are made by exposing, to a coloured object, a multilayer film having silver halide layers, the halide consisting substantially of bromide, sensitized respectively to the blue, green and red regions of the spectrum and containing colour formers ; colour developing, selectively fixing the residual silver halide in the blue sensitive layer, con. verting the remaining light-sensitive silver halides in the other layers into masking images of metallic silver, or of light insensitive silver sulphide or iodide, and removing the silver formed in situ with the colour developed images. The multilayer film is of normal type, as described in numerous Specifications and after exposure and colour development it is treated in an aqueous bath containing ammonium or sodium thiosulphate and an alkali sulphate, an alcohol, sugar or glycerin to remove silver halide from the upper most layer only ; after which, in the one modification of the invention all the silver present is bleached to silver chloride as by a potassium ferricyanide-sodium chloride bath and this silver chloride is removed by aqueous alkali sulphite, ammonium chloride or ammonia ; the film is then reexposed to light, developed in a black and white developer, washed, fixed and dried to provide masking images of silver ; and in the other modification the film is treated in an alkali iodide or sulphide bath to convert the residual silver halides to silver iodide or sulphide masking images without re-exposure, and in this case the metallic silver is removed by selective bleaching and fixing either prior to or after production of the silver iodide or sulphide masks. In either modification it is desirable, after colour development, to continue development with a black and white develop to achieve gamma infinity in all three layers, as described and claimed in Specification 637,865. The invention is compared with that of Specification 541,266, which also produces masks in the green and red sensitive layers of multicolour film, but which has the restriction that the colour sensitivity of these layers must not be destroyed in the bleaching step. Specifications 436,587, 458,400, 465,823, 471,520, 524,154, 524,554, 524,555, 527,283, 540,365, 540,366, 540,367, 540,368, 540,525, and 637,879, also are referred to.
