Abstract

Orthoformic esters are produced by the reaction of a formiminoester hydrohalide with an alcohol in the presence of an inert liquid non-solvent for ammonium halides. Examples of the inert liquid non-solvents given are chlorbenzene, m-xylene, benzene, ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide, pentane, hexane, cyclohexane, chlorcyclohexane and toluene. Starting materials mentioned are ethyl, butyl, cyclohexyl, allyl, benzyl and furfuryl formiminoester hydrohalides and ethyl, propyl, butyl, allyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl and furfuryl alcohols. The reaction may be carried out in the temperature range 0-80 DEG C., preferably within the range 25-60 DEG C. In the examples methyl formiminoester hydrochloride and methyl alcohol react in the presence of (1) chlorbenzene; (2) m-xylene and (3) benzene to give methylorthoformate. The methyl formiminoester hydrochloride is prepared by the action of hydrogen cyanamide on a mixture of chlorbenzene and methyl alcohol.
