Abstract

<PICT:0637726/III/1> A mixture of water, an oil, e.g. stearic or oleic acid, and a volatile organic solvent such as methanol, which is miscible with water, but does not form an azeotropic mixture with it, is separated by introducing it into a stripping column down which it flows in countercurrent to steam from a boiler at the base of the column into which the stripped water/oil mixture is conducted. The boiler is in communication with a settling receiver where the water and oil stratify, the oil layer being periodically withdrawn. The solvent vapours, which are preferably of approximately the same composition as the water/solvent component in the original mixture, are withdrawn from the top of the column and condensed. In an example, a feed mixture of 49 per cent fatty acid and 51 per cent of methanol/water solvent-consisting of 90 per cent methanol: 10 per cent water-was fed in the top section of an eight-plate bubble column 1, the stripped oil/water mixture dropping into a boiler working at 104 DEG C. and having a boiling section 5 separated by a perforated baffle plate 12 from a stratifying section 6. Oil is withdrawn through outlet 8, the oil-free water flowing back to the boiling section through passageway 13.
