[Classes 17 (i) and 17 (ii)] In attaching a sole to an overlated margin of a shoe upper or to a welt strip by thermoplastic materials in which the contacting parts are of these materials, or coated with them, a heated member is introduced between the shoe bottom and the sole to activate the thermoplastic and then pressure is applied to bond the parts, the heat and pressure being applied progressively round the shoe as the work is moved past the heating and pressure devices. Apparatus for attaching a sole to a welted shoe, Fig. 1, has a welt-supporting roll 10, a driven feed roll 12 and a heating plate 14. The roll 10 has a sharp edge 16 which can be inserted in a welt crease which serves as a guide, the roll being freely rotatable on a spindle 20. The feed roll 12 is rotated by a pulley 42 on the other end of a shaft 34 which is mounted in a slide 40 and is urged upwards by a spring 44 to permit the work to be inserted easily. The blade 14 is a thin flat U-shaped plate of high electrical resistance and is heated by an electric supply. It is shaped and positioned to be inserted between the welt and the sole just in front of where the rolls 10, 12 bite to feed the work. In operation, the blade 14 is placed between the welt, held against the roll 10, and the sole. Depression of a treadle pulls down the slide 40 through a rod 48 and hence the roll 12 on to the sole, so that the work is progressively heated, to activate the thermoplastic material and by pressure between the rolls 10, 12 is progressively pressed and bonded together. In a modified apparatus (Fig. 3, not shown), a shoe, in which the lasting margin has been lasted flat on to the insole, is placed over a horn and a heating plate is placed between the shoe bottom and a sole which has been temporarily attached to the shoe, just in advance of a hammer. The shoe is fed by hand between hammer blows so that the thermoplastic material or cement is progressively heated and then the parts are pressed and bonded together by the hammer blows.
