Abstract

A method of recovering lead from leadbearing substances comprises heating 140 parts by weight of the substances with a molten mixture of 28 parts caustic alkali, 2 parts sodium cyanide, and 1 part vegetable black until a layer of liquid metal covered by a fluid flux is produced and subsequently separating the metal from the flux. The lead-bearing substances may contain as impurities one or more other metals forming alkali-soluble oxycompounds, for example, antimony, tin or zinc, in which case the lead is recovered in combination with such other metal or metals. The flux produced may be treated electrolytically (see Group XXXVI) for the production of further metal, which may have a spongy form and may be dried under pressure between absorbent material and then heated under a protective coating of caustic soda to form a layer of molten lead.
