Abstract
A process for the manufacture of an oil-reactive resin comprises reacting by heating a terpene-phenol resin, a reactive phenol having more than two of the o and p positions unoccupied and formaldehyde or a substance which yields formaldehyde under the conditions of the reaction in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. The reaction is preferably carried out in solution in propanol, n-butanol or isobutanol, which may be diluted with benzol, toluol, or xylol. The solvent may be left in the product. The terpene-phenol resins are prepared by condensing terpene hydrocarbons and phenols in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. boron tri-fluoride. Examples describe (1) reacting together terpene-phenol resin, phenol, paraformaldehyde, NaOH, in butanol solution; (2) a process as in (1) but using cresylic acid; (3) using an ammonia catalyst; (4) a process as (1), using ammonia as catalyst and heating the product to remove volatile matter; (5) a process as (1) using ammonia as catalyst, dissolving the product in tung oil at 180 DEG C., and thinning with xylol to form a varnish. Titanium dioxide pigment and cobalt and lead driers are added.
