Abstract
636,859. Cooling. HOWDEN & CO., Ltd., J., and BAILEY, W. May 24, 1948, Nos. 13938 and 24222. [Class 29] [Also in Group XXVI] A heat-engine installation comprises a hot-gas machine 2 and a cold-gas machine 1, both of the meshing-screw type and mechanically connected together to operate in phase, the installation including a number of heat-exchangers 3. Heat energy is applied to the circuit or power applied to the machines. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement in which the engine 2 and the compressor 1 are coupled by gears 6, 7, 8, the latter being integral with a shaft giving external power. The plant includes a heater 4, a cooler 5, a heat-exchanger 10, and a combustion chamber 9. The exchanger 3 absorbs heat from the gas as it passes from the engine 2 and returns this absorbed heat to the gas as it leaves the compressor 1. Fig. 10 shows one valving arrangement with stator valve slots 14 ... 17 co-acting with passages 21, 22, 20, 19 in a valve 11 leading to interlobe spaces of the male rotor. In a modification the ports in the stator and in the rotor are arranged axially. The total weight of gas in the system may be varied by addition or abstraction to vary the power output.
