[Class 78 (i)] Cigarette making machines and more particularly a continuous-rod cigarette making machine provided with collecting mechanism whereby cigarettes produced are delivered into large receptacles or trays such as described'in Specification 549,875 comprises means for conveying the cigarettes from the bed level to a catcher band at a higher level at which the ends and general appearance can be inspected by a person who is standing, the elevating means being such that the height of the trays of the collecting mechanism from the ground is suitable to enable the ends to be inspected by a person in a seated position and comprising a large wheel with plates which act as deflectors and remove the cigarettes from the rods line. A cigarette making machine is provided with a large wheel 2 by which the cigarettes are elevated to a catcher band 4 and from there transferred to trays 10 at such a level that ends may be inspected seated at 11, general inspection of ends being carried out on the catcher band by a person standing. The cigarette 1 cut off from a continuous rod is controlled by a spring flap 6 until it reaches a shroud 5 partly surrounding the elevating wheel 2 and which retains the cigarettes in receptacles formed by blades 3 on the wheel. A pivoted flap 8 may divert cigarettes to a pan 9 for sampling by weight as described in Specification 375,463, [Group XVIII], and a forked plate 7 may strip the cigarettes from the wheel on to the carrier band. The wheel may comprise discs which allow short defective cigarettes to drop, a guard 14 being provided and receptacles 15 for collection. Alternatively the plate 7 may be replaced by bands or tapes passing partly round the wheel and round an upper pulley at the catcher band level which bands allow defective cigarettes to fall.
