Abstract
635,737. Valves actuated by auxiliary valves. BAILEY, S. R. Sept. 15, 1947, No. 25174. [Class 135] In a flushing valve of the kind comprising a cylindrical chamber 1 with a lateral inlet 3 and an axial outlet 4, a hollow piston 9 which is slidable in the chamber and carries a main valve 9a to control the outlet and also houses a pilot relief valve 11 which, when opened, allows liquid to escape from the upper side of the piston, a bleed allowing liquid to flow from the inlet to the upper side of the piston to build up pressure and so close the main valve, and means, such as a handle 8, to unseat the relief valve to lower the pressure above the piston so that the inlet pressure will raise the piston and open the main valve which stays open until pressure has built up again above the piston, the piston carries a pair of laterally-extending, metal annular fins or flanges 12, 13 which slide against the wall of the chamber 1 and are slit or slotted to provide the bleed passage. The flanges are retained in position by a screw-cap 15 which is apertured to allow venting of the liquid above the piston when valve 11 is opened. The pilot valve carries a telescopic extension 11a which is engaged by a spring-loaded plunger 7 to tilt the pilot valve when the handle 8 is tilted. The lowered pressure above the piston ensures the telescoping of the extension 11a so that it clears the plunger 7. The main valve carries a number of depending guide fingers 18a through the spaces between which the plunger 7 can reciprocate, and as the fingers are spaced from the wall surrounding the outlet, a depending machined skirt portion 18b constituting a guide for the valve is also provided. Specification 529,659 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
