Abstract

635,361. Regulating air supply for combustion. IPSCOL, Ltd., LUNNEY, R. H., and WEBB, E. F. D. Feb. 27, 1947, No. 5715. [Class 51 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] Mechanism for controlling excess air to a furnace equipped with an automatic combustion control regulator and automatic fuel feed control mechanism comprises a differential gear, one element of which is rotated by the feed control and the other by manual control, the third element varying the air flow. When the fuel feed mechanism moves to cater for a given furnace load, a proportional movement is given to a shaft 16 carrying a cam 15, the latter turning a lever 13 which rotates the shaft 11 of the planet wheel assembly of a differential gear 1. Assuming the sun wheel attached to the shaft 5 is locked, rotation of the planet wheels causes the sun wheel attached to the shaft 7 to turn through twice the angle of turning of the lever 13, this causing the drum 8 to alter the tension in the control spring 10 loading a diaphragm subjected to the differential pressure across an orifice in the combustion air duct or between two passes of the boiler, the displacement of the diaphragm operating an amplifier and servo-mechanism coupled to a damper or fanspeed control. If the fuel/air ratio determined by the spring is incorrect, adjustment of the air flow is obtained by manually turning the lever 6 which turns the sun wheel on the shaft 5 and alters the spring tension.
