Abstract
Hydrocarbon and vegetable oil compositions are obtained by adding hydrocarbon substituted silicon halides or the silicones obtained by the hydrolysis thereof, or tetra-hydrocarbon substituted silanes to hydrocarbon or vegetable oils, e.g. drying oils such as chinawood or linseed oil, semi-drying oils such as soya bean oil and non-drying oils such as castor oil. A large number of hydrocarbon groups which may be attached to the silicon atom are given.ALSO:Organo silicon resins are obtained by the hydrolysis and condensation of hydrocarbon silicon halides. The hydrocarbon silicon halides are derived from silicon tetrahalides, disiliconhexahalides, trisilicon octahalides, polysilicon polyhalides and silicon oxyhalides. A large number of hydrocarbon groups are given. The resins may be mixed with oils. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the organo silicon resins may be mixed with other types of resins, a large number of which are specified, or the resins may be formed in the presence of other resin-forming materials. The resulting resins may be dissolved in a large number of solvents, e.g. hydrocarbons, ethers, glycol ethers, esters, alcohols and phenols. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Organo-silicon derivatives are prepared by reacting a silicon halide or a silicon oxyhalide with a halohydrocarbon such as an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl halide in the presence of magnesium at a temperature at which refluxing takes place. The halohydrocarbon may be mixed with the silicon halide or oxyhalide before contacting it with the metallic magnesium, or the halohydrocarbon may be reacted with a mixture of magnesium and the solicon halide. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent, particularly those employed in Grignard reactions, and the process may be carried out under superatmospheric pressure. The mol. ratio of halohydrocarbon to silicon halide or oxyhalide may be equal to the ratio of the number of hydrocarbon groups to silicon in the desired organo silicon derivative i.e. 1 : 1, 2 : 1, 3 : 1 or 4 : 1. The process may be repeated to introduce an additional organo substituent which is either the same or different from that introduced in the first place. Catalysts employed for accelerating Grignard reactions, such as ethyl orthosilicate may be employed. The organo-silicon derivative formed may be hydrolysed either in the presence or absence of a solvent, or may be reacted with alcohols, glycols, amines or acid salts. Suitable silicon halides mentioned are silicon tetrachloride and the corresponding fluorine, bromine and iodine compounds, disiliconhexahalides, trisilicon octahalides, polysilicon polyhalides and silicon oxychlorides. A large number of suitable hydrocarbon groups are given. A number of detailed examples are given. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the above process and includes the use of lithium as well as magnesium. An additional example exemplifies the process using lithium. Further examples are given of the above process employing magnesium and, in addition, examples are given of the preparation of organosilicon compounds employing organo-magnesium halides as such by the normal method. Other catalysts mentioned are methylorthosilicate and benzyl orthosilicate.
