Abstract

A cold-setting cement comprises in solution in a volatile solvent, a copolymer of butadiene, styrene and like monomers, an oil-soluble thermosetting phenol-aldehyde resin, and a coumarone-indene or terpene resin as tackifier. The mixture is heated to about 250 DEG F. before addition of solvent in order to copolymerize the ingredients and render the mixture tough, coherent and elastic and with an internal strength which exceeds its adhesion to a smooth metal surface. Example (1) specifies a composition comprising: ..Parts .Synthetic rubbers polymer.700 .Phenyl-a -naphthylamine.7 .Coumarone-indene resin.70 .Zinc resinate.35 .Oil-soluble phenol-aldehyde resin.140 .Magnesium oxide.35 .Magnesium carbonate.35 .Volatile hydrocarbon solvent.3045 .Viscosity-reducing agent.15 Examples of the various resins and polymers used are given in the Specification. Ester gum, methyl abietate, limed or other rosins, may be substituted for the zinc resinate and zinc, calcium or aluminium oxides for the magnesium oxide. The viscosity reducer may be a mixture of sulphonated petroleum product and butyl alcohol, while solvents specified are petrol, benzene, ethyl alcohol, and heptane.ALSO:A cold setting adhesive cement comprises in solution in a volatile solvent (a) a copolymer of styrene and butadiene, (b) an oil soluble thermosetting phenol aldehyde resin, and (c) a coumaroneindene or terpene resin as tackifier. The mixture is heated to about 250 DEG F. before addition of solvent in order to copolymerize the ingredients and render the mixture tough, coherent and elastic and with an internal strength which exceeds its adhesion to a smooth metal surface. Example (1) specifies a composition comprising .synthetic rubber copolymer.700 parts .phenyl-di-naphthylamine.7 parts .coumarone-indene resin.70 parts .Zinc resinate.35 parts .oil soluble phenol-aldehyde resin.140 parts .Magnesium oxide.35 parts .Magnesium carbonate.35 parts .Volatile hydrocarbon solvent.3,045 parts .Viscosity reducing agent.15 parts Examples of the various resins and polymers used are given in the specn. Ester gum, methyl abietate, limed or other resins may be substituted for the zinc resinate and zinc, calcium or aluminium oxides for the magnesium oxide. The viscosity reducer may be a mixture of sulphonated petroleum product and butyl alcohol while solvents specified are petrol, benzene, ethyl alcohol, and heptane.
