Abstract
Woollen textiles are treated locally with an acidic substance, then treated with a hypochlorite and dyed in a bath containing one or more dyestuffs. The acid-printed parts are thereby chlorinated and acquire a greater affinity for dyestuffs than the remainder. The acidic substance may be an acid, or another substance which gives an acidic solution in water, e.g. aluminium sulphate. It may be applied from a solution thickened with gum by known methods of applying printing pastes, e.g. by screens or rollers. The textiles may then be dried and steamed before immersion in a cold hypochlorite solution preferably buffered, e.g. with disodium hydrogen phosphate or borax. They are then mangled, treated with bisulphite to remove excess hypochlorite and rinsed. For tone-in-tone effects, the dyeing takes place in a bath containing an acid dyestuff, an acid (e.g. sulphuric) and a wool resist agent, the latter reducing the colouration of the parts not initially printed with acid. Contrasting colour effects may be obtained by adding to the dyebath a dyestuff with less-marked difference of affinity for the two portions of the material. Suitable dyestuffs of each type are mentioned and an example of the first process is given.
